Meet Turtles, Gators & More Up Close in Navarre Beach (and Nearby)

Up-close animal encounters, hands-on learning, and conservation in action: plan your visit to Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center and Gulf Breeze Zoo for an epic, family-friendly day.

Coming to Navarre Beach soon? If you're an animal lover looking for meaningful experiences packed with learning and memorable encounters, two incredible spots should be on your bucket list: the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center and Gulf Breeze Zoo.

These are two very different attractions, but they share one thing in common: you won't just be looking at animals. You'll learn about them and see the care and effort that goes into protecting them. There's also a good dose of fun along the way.

In this blog post, I've pulled together the highlights of the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center and Gulf Breeze Zoo to help you plan your visit and decide what to focus on. Both offer plenty of activities, from hands-on encounters to moments that give you a deeper understanding of the animals.

A quick hello from us:

At Gulf Coast Getaways, we offer a handpicked lineup of vacation rentals along Florida's Gulf Coast, and we've gotten to know this stretch of shoreline pretty well over time. Our destination blog is full of helpful posts, from beach day tips to where to grab the best craft beer and even a bit of local history.

Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center

A Close-Up Look at Real Conservation Work

NBSTCC isn't a big aquarium or a flashy attraction. It's a small, local conservation facility and education center dedicated to protecting threatened and endangered sea turtles. It operates a 2,010-square-foot space that is open to the public year-round. Here, beyond learning about their work and these captivating animals, you can engage in hands-on activities in a meaningful and memorable way.

Meeting Sweet Pea

The big star of NBSTCC is Sweet Pea, a rescued green sea turtle that lives at the center. She's not releasable due to severe injuries, and her story is a big part of the experience. It's a great opportunity to understand what happens when marine life is impacted by fishing gear and boat strikes.

You'll see Sweet Pea in a large saltwater pool, hear her rescue story, and get a clear sense of how the team cares for her day to day.

Hands-On Experiences That Go Beyond Just Watching

Here are some of the most popular hands-on experiences you can find at the center that go beyond just watching and truly focus on education, but never in a dull way. Visitors often highlight in reviews that these learning experiences are always delivered in a fun way by passionate professionals who bring real dynamism to the activities.

  • Jr. Sea Turtle Rescuer Experience: A behind-the-scenes session where kids (and adults) learn how rescues work, handle tools, and go through simulated scenarios.

  • Honorary Animal Care Team Member: This gives you access to the daily care side of things. Feeding, learning routines, and understanding how animals are looked after in a conservation setting.

  • Tortoise Encounters (Safari & Flip Flop): A more relaxed, fun option where you can feed and interact with resident tortoises. The "Painting Tortoise Tracks" session is especially popular with kids, you leave with an actual piece of art created during the experience.

Pro tip:
These programs usually require booking in advance, and they're worth planning ahead if this is high on your list.

Shark School, Seashell School, and Coral Reef Class

The center offers three primary educational programs: Shark School, Seashell School, and Coral Reef Class. All are designed as hands-on learning experiences for families and students. Each program includes early entrance to the center, a take-home goodie bag, and a certificate of completion.

Shark School: This eye-opening program aims to shift perceptions of sharks from feared predators to respected apex predators by highlighting their vital role in maintaining healthy oceans.

Seashell School: This program explores the science and history behind the beautiful shells found along the Gulf Coast.

Coral Reef Class: A family-friendly session that clarifies common misconceptions about these complex animals and their ecosystems.

Good to know:

  • For all three programs, participants aged 12 or younger must be accompanied by an adult with a guest ticket.

  • NBSTCC typically opens to the public at 10:00 am, meaning class participants have the opportunity for early entrance and a more private experience during their sessions.

Gulf Breeze Zoo

Bigger Scale, More Variety, More Interaction

If the Sea Turtle Center is more intimate, Gulf Breeze Zoo is the opposite. Just a 15–20 minute drive from Navarre Beach, this impressive attraction spans wide, open grounds and is home to over 800 animals representing species from around the world. Despite its scale, it places a strong focus on conservation, education, and interactive animal encounters.

Animal Encounters Kids Won't Stop Talking About

  • Giraffe Feeding: One of the biggest highlights. You can hand-feed giraffes from a dedicated platform, and they get surprisingly close.

  • Budgie Adventure Aviary: You walk into a free-flight space filled with hundreds of small birds. Buy a seed stick, and they'll land on your hands, arms, or even your shoulders. It may sound chaotic, but it's incredibly fun, genuinely touching, and carefully supervised by the zoo's staff.

  • Petting Zoo Area: Goats, sheep, and smaller animals that kids can feed and interact with easily.

  • Alligator Feedings: Slightly older kids get the chance to offer food to younger American alligators, typically around three to six years old, in a setting that brings them closer than they might expect. The feeding is carefully supervised, of course, but the animals remain very much themselves. You might hear a hiss or catch a flash of movement that reminds you these aren't trained performers. They're simply being fed, not putting on a show.

The Safari Train Ride (Don't Skip This)

One of the best parts of the zoo is the Safari Express Train Ride. This must-try attraction offers a unique, 15-minute narrated "wildlife safari" through a 30-acre free-roaming preserve. Since it's narrated, you'll get in-depth information about the animals and their habitats as they travel through the preserve.

The train is the only way for you to see certain "marquee animals" that are not visible from the pedestrian walking paths. Below are some of the safari highlights:

  • Nile Hippopotamuses: This is the only way to view the Nile hippos, including a resident named Koboko, who weighs approximately 3,000 pounds.

  • Island Habitats: The train offers a close-up look at Gorilla Island and the orangutan enclosure. The gorilla habitat is notably designed with no visible fences or barriers because gorillas cannot swim, allowing for an unobstructed view of these massive primates.

  • Preserve Wildlife: In addition to hippos and primates, the train provides views of rhinos, zebras, wildebeests, Sable Antelopes, and various other antelope species.

Good to know:
The first train departs the depot at 10:00 am every day and runs every hour on the hour. Catch a ride until 4:00 pm. Tickets are included in your admission price.

Easy to Navigate for Families

The layout of the zoo works well for families traveling with kids, thanks to its wide paths and shaded areas. There are also plenty of restrooms, as well as a café when you need to take a break and grab a bite.

It's best to plan for about 3–4 hours if you want to do it properly, especially if you're including feedings and encounters.

FAQ: Planning Your Experience

1. What's the best time of day to visit these attractions?

Early morning tends to be the most comfortable, especially during the warmer months, and it's also when animals are generally more active. Arriving close to opening time at the zoo makes it easier to catch feeding sessions and move through the grounds before the hottest part of the day.

2. Are these experiences suitable for very young kids (under 5)?

Yes, both attractions work well for younger children. The Sea Turtle Center is compact and simple to get around, which suits shorter attention spans, while Gulf Breeze Zoo features wide, stroller-friendly paths and shaded areas that help make longer visits more comfortable.

3. Do I need to book animal encounters in advance?

Booking ahead is a good idea, particularly on weekends or during peak travel periods. Some of the more popular experiences, such as giraffe feedings or private encounters, tend to fill up quickly, and securing a spot in advance allows for a stress-free visit.

4. Are there any seasonal experiences to look out for?

Sea turtle nesting season, which typically runs from May through October, can bring additional programs and occasional guided activities tied to conservation efforts. At the zoo, certain encounters may vary slightly depending on weather conditions and the animals' care routines.

5. Are there other animal encounter spots near Navarre Beach worth considering?

Beyond these two highlights, the surrounding area offers a few more low-key options. Navarre Beach Marine Science Station offers hands-on marine education with touch tanks and local species, while Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge focuses on rehabilitation and gives a closer look at rescued native animals. For something out on the water, dolphin cruises departing from Pensacola Beach offer the chance to see marine life in its natural setting, and nearby stretches of Gulf Islands National Seashore are ideal for spotting birds, dolphins, and other coastal wildlife.

5. How do these experiences differ from typical zoos or aquariums?

The main difference lies in the level of engagement. These visits go beyond passive viewing, with guided sessions, smaller group interactions, and a stronger emphasis on conservation. The result is a more immersive experience that's both educational and personal.
